Whatever you're writing – fiction or nonfiction – readers will care about your story only if they care about your people. In this workshop, you'll learn techniques for creating fictional characters and depicting real people. You’ll learn how to breathe life into the page so that your characters start telling you how the story should go.

Writing and Revising

If you want to refine your story-telling skills and cut the time you will need to spend editing, this workshop is for you. You'll learn how to step back from a manuscript in order to find – and fix – flaws in your plot, structure, characterization and style. You'll learn how to rethink, rework and rewrite so that your manuscript will live up to your vision.
Special option: Participants are invited to bring a piece of their own writing (though you don’t have to!) If you do bring a piece, bring 3 copies of something short (1,000 words absolute maximum, though 750 words works better).

If you've ever dreamed of becoming a published author, this workshop is for you. We’ll cover everything from getting started to getting an agent, from getting your short pieces published to finding a book publisher, from writing a query letter to writing what the publishers want. Bring your questions. Come and get ready to be published!

Special Option: Participants are invited to bring a draft of a query letter you might use to interest an agent or publisher in your book. You don’t need to bring anything, but if you do, 3 copies could be helpful.

Workshop leader Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for 
more than 25 years.

Guest speaker Carolyn Forde is a literary agent with Westwood Creative Artists, Canada's largest largest literary agency. Carolyn is a relatively new agent and is actively building her list of authors. At present, she represents some thirty authors including Karma Brown, Kristi Charish, Trevor Cole, Lynn Crosbie, Sylvia Fraser, Bill Gaston, Clifford Jackman, Vincent Marcone, Mark Richardson, Barb Stegemann and Manjushree Thapa. She also represents some authors jointly with Bruce Westwood, the Founder, President and CEO of the agency. Carolyn has wide-ranging tastes - from literary to commercial fiction, from serious narrative nonfiction to pop-culture and humour. She welcomes new authors. She welcomes new authors.
